Example plumbing company A colder month's water usage can hint at serious leaks.

moreless

The EPA suggests looking at a colder month, like January or February. If a family of four uses more than 12,000 gallons that month, there could be serious leaks.

Showers count too. The EPA says a showerhead leaking at 10 drips per minute wastes more than 500 gallons a year.

Save this for the next time your bill looks high. When did you last check your toilet flapper?

The average household's leaks can waste more than 9,300 gallons of water a year, the EPA says. And nine percent of homes have leaks wasting 50 gallons or more a day.

The one you can hear adds up too. A faucet dripping at one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons a year, the EPA says. That is enough water for more than 180 showers.

Check it yourself. Read your water meter, use no water for two hours, and if it changes at all you probably have a leak. Or put a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank: color in the bowl after 10 minutes means a leak. #fixaleak.

The EPA says the average household's leaks can waste more than 9,300 gallons of water a year.

The common culprits are small: worn toilet flappers, dripping faucets and other leaking valves.

A toilet flapper is the simple rubber device that holds water in the tank, and the rubber can wear out. The EPA says it should be checked periodically and replaced at least every five years, because an old or worn one can silently leak thousands of gallons a year.

A faucet dripping once per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons a year.

For anyone running a home or looking after a building, the numbers add up. The EPA puts the average family's water costs at more than $1,000 a year.

It also says fixing easily corrected leaks can save homeowners about 10 percent on their water bills.

Start with the water meter. Read it before and after two hours with no water in use; if it changes at all, you probably have a leak.

Then put a few drops of food coloring in a toilet tank. Color in the bowl after 10 minutes means a leak.

Example heating and cooling company To get the best performance from new HVAC equipment, it must be properly installed.

Nearly half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling.

ENERGY STAR says improper installation can reduce system efficiency by up to 30%, costing you more on utility bills and possibly shortening the equipment's life.

One more thing before you buy: ENERGY STAR suggests addressing the big air leaks in your house and the duct system first. Sometimes those are the real sources of problems rather than the equipment.

Save this for the day you start collecting quotes on a new system. What is one question you would ask an installer before signing?
