Example roofing company Terra cotta tile and wood shakes are naturally cool roofing materials, the EPA notes.

Asphalt and metal shingles get there with cool-colored granules or reflective paint.

Cool roofs generally save more energy in hot, sunny climates like the Southern U.S., on buildings with low roof insulation, ENERGY STAR says.

Savings in Northern climates are predicted to grow as the climate warms.

Keeping a cool roof clean helps it keep reflecting, especially on low-sloped roofs.

Save this for the day you pick your next roof color.

Cool roofs now come in colors beyond white: new coatings and materials give other colors high solar reflectance and thermal emittance, ENERGY STAR says.

In air-conditioned homes, solar reflectance from a cool roof can cut peak cooling demand by 11–27%, the EPA says. #coolroof.

Traditional roofs absorb sunlight during the day, heating the building and the air around it, ENERGY STAR explains.

On a typical summer afternoon, a clean white roof that reflects 80% of sunlight stays about 50°F cooler than a gray roof reflecting only 20%, according to Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's Heat Island Group.

A cool roof works in two ways: solar reflectance bounces sunlight away, and thermal emittance releases the heat the roof does absorb.

Lighter colors tend to score highest, and new coatings and materials now give other colors high marks too.

For steep-sloped house roofs, the EPA's cool product list includes asphalt shingles with cool-colored granules, metal shingles with reflective paint, and naturally cool terra cotta tile and wood shakes.

Products with infrared reflective pigments tend to cost more. In air-conditioned homes, a cool roof's reflectance can reduce peak cooling demand by 11–27%.

Before you settle on a color, you can compare ratings in the Cool Roof Rating Council's online product database.

Example roofing company Cool roof standards and incentives often take your roof's slope into account.

The EPA says those requirements also weigh how much of the roof is covered in cool materials, the materials' solar reflectance and thermal emittance values, and whether the property is residential or commercial.

Solar reflectance is how well a roof reflects sunlight away. Thermal emittance is how well it sheds the heat it does absorb.

One more thing the slides skipped: ENERGY STAR notes that credit for cool roofs in green building programs may be available.

Some places may require a cool roof when you re-roof. And some U.S. locations offer homeowners rebates and loans for one.
