Example veterinary practice Flying with your pet this holiday? The health certificate should be dated within 10 days of departure.

The CDC says traveling with pets by plane takes careful preparation and planning, and could also be costly.

One step the slides skipped: before departure or after arrival, give your dog a potty break before securing it in the crate.

Also keep the numbers for your veterinarian and a 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital near your destination easy to reach.

The CDC suggests a health certificate from your veterinarian dated within 10 days of departure. Check vaccinations too, and book a direct flight when possible to lower the chance of separation during layovers or extreme weather.

For cargo: a USDA-approved shipping crate big enough to stand, sit and turn around in comfortably. Mark "live animal" on it with your name, cell phone and destination phone number. #pettravel.

Flying with a pet takes careful preparation, the CDC says.

…see moresee less

It adds that traveling with pets by plane could also be costly.

Its suggestions start with the vet: a health certificate dated within 10 days of departure, and vaccinations checked to make sure they are up to date.

Next, the route. The CDC suggests a direct flight when possible, to decrease the chances of a pet being separated from its owner during extreme weather or layovers.

For cargo, it points to a U.S. Department of Agriculture-approved shipping crate, large enough for the pet to stand, sit and turn around in comfortably. The door should be securely closed but not locked, so airline staff can open it in an emergency.

The label matters too: mark "live animal" on the crate with your name, cell phone and destination phone number.

For anyone who plans travel for a household or a team, it is the same discipline as any trip: documents, timing, contingencies.

Example veterinary practice A cracked window feels like enough. The CDC says it is not.

Inside a car, temperatures can rise almost 20 degrees Fahrenheit in the first 10 minutes, even with a window cracked. And in cold weather, animals left in cars can freeze to death.

On the road, if your pet rides on a seat, the CDC suggests the back seat in a harness attached to the seat buckle. It also suggests a meal 3 to 4 hours before you leave to prevent car sickness.

Before any trip, the CDC also says to microchip your pet and make sure your contact information is updated.

Save this for your next trip. Where does your pet ride in the car?

The CDC notes that even in cool temperatures, cars can heat up to dangerous temperatures very quickly, and that in cold weather, animals left in cars can freeze to death.

For anyone who drives with a dog or cat, the rest of the guidance is practical.

If pets ride on the seat, keep them in the back seat in a harness attached to the seat buckle. If they ride in a crate, make sure it is well ventilated and secured so it won't slide or shift when the car stops.

Feed your pet 3 to 4 hours before leaving to prevent car sickness.

And keep the number of a 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital where you will be visiting easily accessible.
